EQUION TRIAL (no affiliation)

A while ago, I wrote a post about equine lice.  (You can read it here.)

In that post, I thought my pony, Slick, had lice.  EEECH!  But, upon inspection and education, I realized that he didn’t have lice, just dandruff.

But how in the world did he get dandruff?

All I knew was that all the grooming in the world would not fix it.  Dandruff comes from within.  It is a skin/scalp issue.  What was I doing differently in his feed for him to develop dandruff?

And then it occurred to me.  AHA!  I had run out of Equion a few months prior and hadn’t reordered.  That was the first time in probably 15 years that I had run out and not reordered!

So, on a hunch, I ordered more Equion and fed it to him religiously.

I didn’t wash his mane, use any product or alter any other part of his regular feed in the last 5 weeks.

And look!  His mane is healthy and dandruff-free!

The only difference is Equion.

This is Slick's mane now! It looks great and the only thing I changed was adding Equion to his diet!

I cannot remember who first told me about it, but I tried Equion about 17 years ago and was hooked.  It was the first supplement I ever purchased!  This product is no-frills packaging, relatively inexpensive and is a nice, simple, everyday supplement that totally makes a difference.  I’m not a chemist but whatever is in it, does help their systems absorb nutrients, keeps the coat and feet healthy and also spit shines the reproductive tracks on my mares (when I was breeding).

As I’ve said before, my trainers always asked me what I gave to my horses to make them all look so good.  I told them Equion! I swear!  (And you know trainers hate to ask owners for tips…)  ;)

I have no affiliation.  Here is the Equion website.  They are great people and will take care of you!  FAMILY OWNED!

Click image to go to their site

Slick and Dodger both have their healthy manes back... they have been restarted on Equion since Dec 15th. No special grooming, just good food.

Supplement Trial Update! Enzion, Minereq and Not So Sweet Itch.

Today is Supplement Update Day!  (I have no affiliation with any products.)

SAM AND MINEREQ

As you may remember, about a month ago I noticed some severe chipping and splitting in Sam’s hooves.

Since Sam is wild, I cannot inspect her feet, but I can help her out via her favorite thing – food.

Sam's cracked hooves from the day I started the trial with Minereq

So, I decided to try MINEREQ from Omega Alpha.

(They send me a new products to try and I happened to have this one on the shelf just waiting a guinea pig!  There are no kick-backs for my reviews.)

You can click the image to go to the Minereq page at Big Dee

Minereq is supposed to help with feet as well as adding supplements needed when your hay is not up to snuff.

Here is a description:

My trial was to put a 3/4 scoop (she’s a very small mare) on her pellets every morning for at least a month.

On the first day, I was a bit nervous as it looked like I was pouring ugh all over her grain.  The powder is white and doesn’t smell ‘horsey’.  So, I added water and stirred it up to make sure it was palatable.

To my surprise, she ate it all, no issues!  (I should have known that a great company like Omega Alpha would think of taste…)

So, Sam received the Minereq every day for a little over a month.

Of course, the hoof has to grow out to see the difference, but obviously, it is making a difference!  Also, her coat looks wonderful!  I mean, I thought she was shiny before but this gal is fat, shiny and happy like crazy!

Sam's feet today...

I’ve been happy with all of the Omega Alpha products I’ve tried so far!  I LOOOVE Anti-Flam (for inflammation and laminitis), Sinew-X (for arthritis and muscle soreness), Respi-Free (for allergy and breathing issues) and Biotic 8 (stomach, digestion and weight gain).  All GREAT products!  Now I can add this one to the list!

Here are the ingredients:

If you want to try Minereq, you can order it from Big Dee.  Here is the link

ENZION HORSE HOOF SUPPLEMENT

I also love the Enzion company.  They are small and only make a few products but all the products are WONDERFUL.  I have been using the Equion for years and my trainers ask me my ‘secret’.  I always tell them, EQUION!

Love this stuff - been using it for 20 years. No frills but it works!!

Anyway, Enzion was having a sale on their hoof supplement, which I had never tried.  So, I decided to give it a go.

Finn has soft and narrow feet.  BG has good feet.  Wrigley has chippy feet.

I chose these three horses for the trial because they are all in the same pasture and could share each other’s food – which they do anyway.

So I orderd the Enzion Hoof Supplement and it came almost immediately – another good thing about the company. -

I opened the huge pail and what wafted up into my nostrils reminded me of my childhood.  CoCo Puffs!  I swear!  It’s fragrance is kind-of nutty and chocolatey.  I wanted to eat it!

Anyway, I put it on their feed for a month.

Silly me neglected to take photos of their ‘before’ hooves.  Dang it.

But, it doesn’t take a ‘before’ photo to show you the PERFECT feet that they all have now.  (Finn and BG are an almost identical brother and sister pair.  These pics are of different horses, take my word for it…  <smile>)

Finn's feet have always been soft and chippy. Look at them now! Finn rides in boots.

BG's feet now - perfect! I ride her barefoot.

Wrig's feet look great, too! He runs all over his rocky pasture!

Pretty amazing, eh?

Again, Enzion has great products!  I use the Equion daily with my show horses, too.

Check out their no-frills website.  To me, they have a simple label, simple packaging and two kick-arse products.

No frills packaging but a very effective product! Click to order the amazing hoof supplement!

EQUI-SPA DEAL OF THE  MONTH!

I use Equi-Spa products all the time.  As you know, I looove THE BALM, the Peppermint Protection Spray and I douse Norma’s grazing muzzle with the Lavender wash which she loves.  All my horses want to eat the Equi-Spa products…

This month, they have the Not-So-Sweet Itch on sale.

Do you have this rat’s nest on your horse’s tail head?

Tess' tail. I HATE when she does this.

This is Tess’ tail.  She did this last week.  I absolutely hate it when she rubs.  It isn’t because she has worms, which she doesn’t.  It isn’t because her udder is dirty, which it isn’t.

She does it because it feels good.  Arrgh.

A while back, Equi-Spa sent some Not-So-Sweet-Itch gel for me to try.

To be honest, I was skeptical since they all rub during the really hot months.  But, I tried it anyway.

I worked!  I couldn’t believe it!  The rubbing stopped.

No more rub!

You have to use it daily – obviously I skipped Tess for about a week – but during these summer months, you won’t go outside to find your horse’s gorgeous tail RUINED!

I also have a bottle in my trailer.  I find that it helps keep the horseflies off of the end of my horse during rides.

I also put it on Wrigley’s mane because he itches it often and it breaks off.  (He doesn’t have mites.)

Here is the information on the sale.  You can click on the image to go to the site for the sale – and purchase any of the great products!  Or, click here.

IRON MAN’S RECEIPT FOR THE JUNE BUCKET FUND

Here is the receipt or the June Bucket Fund from us to Iron Man, the rescued mustang foal and his buddies.  Yay!  We sent $175!!  They were THRILLED.  I mean it!  Shirley said that donations have been down and this money would really help with Foal Lac pellets.  So, THANK YOU ALL!!

Thank you for supporting the Bucket Fund!  For the month of July, we are supporting THE GOLDEN CARROT.  Here is a link to their story.

THANKS, AGAIN!

GUILTY!

But first, I have a photo of my very guilty 2 year-old.  I left him in the barn while I went to get something to drink and when I came back, he had destroyed or knocked over every single thing in there.  When I asked him the obvious, “DID YOU DO THIS?!” he gave me this priceless expression!  He will never win at poker with that face…

THINGS I COULDN’T DO WITHOUT

I’ve spoken about some of these before, but I wanted to talk about them again because I was thinking to myself  about how much they help!  I thought you might like to know, as well, in case any of you had missed this.

1)  Garlic:

I use garlic to help keep the flying insects away from my horses.  It really, really works.  If I don’t use it, I can absolutely see the difference… When I use it, they might have a few flies on their fly masks and a few on their bodies.  If I do not use the garlic, they will have a carpet of flies on their faces and all over their bodies.

I get it from Springtime, Inc.  (no affiliation).  For me, it has been the least expensive and effective garlic that I’ve tried.  I did have a friend go to a local Health Food Store to see if their powdered garlic was less expensive, but it ended up being almost double the price (even including shipping).  So, I think Springtime is the best option that I know about.

2)  Predators:

I use fly predators.  Yes, they work, too!  In combination with the garlic and fly spray, I don’t have a very irritating fly problem and that is saying a lot since I have cows all around the ranch.

I have found that the predators from Spalding are the best (again, no affiliation).  They arrive on time, they take a few days to hatch and they are packed well.  If you get a dud pack (rare), they will replace it.  So, I totally believe in Predators.

3)  Cheap and good fly mask:

I found this fly mask early in the year.  It was on sale and I thought it might not be any good because who puts a fly mask on sale in the beginning of the season?  But, it is a really good one.

The eyes have darts.  It had double velcro.  The netting is strong.  The ear holes make sense.

The downsides are that they are kinda short on the nose and there is no forelock hole.  But, for the price, I think they are great!  You can get them at Valley Vet.  Super Mesh Fly Mask by Brookside.

4)  The Easy Catch Halter:

I love this thing!

I am one of those people that uses a lead rope around the neck to bring my horses in… not that smart.  So far, no accidents but plenty of close calls.  I should know better… and I do.  So, last year I purchased one of these at the Horse Expo.

It is great!  It is so easy, the horse doesn’t even know he’s been “got”.  I swear.  And, it looks really comfortable for the horse.  I highly recommend this for easy, lightweight  catching and easy moving.

5)  EQUION:

This is a supplement that I use for coats and hooves.

I will never not use it.  It works so well, my trainer even uses it now.  (We all know how difficult it is to convince a trainer!)  He says that my horses always come in with the best coats and hooves.  This is why.  Equion.

I do have all my horses out on pasture and they all move around often and eat variable grass hays (no alfalfa).  Equion seems to fill in all the nutritional blanks.  I’m very pleased.

6)  Davis Boot:

This is a great all-around, inexpensive boot!  I use it to soak as well as keep a wrapped foot protected.

I have put this boot into service continuously on my mare and it still looks great!  The Davis boot lets the air in but still makes sure all is clean and together when it is time to change the wrapping.  This is so easy, I nearly kissed it the first time I used it…

Oh, and if it is too big, you can vet wrap the top closure (within reason).  I love this boot and have over-used my welcome with it since I’m borrowing my friends and haven’t given it back  yet.  Bonnie, I owe you!

The Flies are Comin’ – Go Garlic! Plus other Powdered Wonders!

GARLIC

People are always doubtful when I say that Garlic keeps the pests away… I don’t understand why.  It works!  I have been using it for 7 Spring/Summers.  We have 13 horses here and cows across the road.  Flies happen.  But, Garlic really, really, really cuts down on the action.

I have tried a few brands.  For me, (again, no affiliation) I prefer garlic from SPRINGTIME, INC.  They call it “Bug Off Garlic” and it is aptly named.  I wait for the sales (there is one going on now…) and I purchase several tubs at once (cheaper).  I also like to get the freebies and if you order certain amounts, you can get more for free.  I love that!

Anyway, I give them all one scoop on their supplements in the morning.  I do it in the morning because the horses need the immediate extra strength boost during the day.  I think the garlic hits their system after about a half hour and lasts most of the day.  It is just like when you eat a heavily garlic’d dinner.  It stays with you.  It stays with them, too.  I won’t say that the flies, biting things and mosquitoes go away completely, but they go away a lot.  In fact, there are some horses that do so well with it that they don’t wear fly masks anymore.  Wow!

Start them out with a little bit and then gradually work up to one scoop.  Mine love it now and will stick their noses into the garlic bucket if I let them.  Anyway, your horses will be perfumed with the scent of garlic, for sure.  And, yes, other riders might notice it.  I often hear, “Anyone smell pizza around here?  Weird…”.  I just smile.

*Garlic works best as a fly repellent in conjunction with Predators.  I wrote about them in Post 2/10/10.

EQUION

The other wonder product I wanted to tell you about is Equion.  I have been using it for 10 years, at least.  It does wonders for coats and hooves.  My trainer cannot believe how gorgeous my horses’ coats are when they arrive to his place.  Ha!  I love that!  And, their feet are strong like bull.

Equion is easy to purchase, is delivered fast and it works!  Add one scoop to the grain/pellets daily and you are done.

MARE MAGIC

And, I also wanted to say that I tried Mare Magic last Spring.  I was quite dubious. But, someone I trusted told me to try it on my fidgety mare.  I did.  She was visibly less fidgety.  Then I tried it on my very nasty-during-heat mare.  It helped!  So, then I tried it on my Icy because she is a very busy (read, too busy – makes me crazy!) and it gave her more focus.  OK, I’m sold.  I definitely use it during heavy heat cycles for the mares.  I really think it helps.  Someone told me that I could order the basic ingredient online at a major health food store.  But, I haven’t done that.  I just go down to the large feedstore in town and purchase it there.  It does last quite a while.  On a side note, they say it helps geldings, too.  I have yet to try that.

So, there you have it!  Powdered Wonders!
