OK, this is really cool!

ART AND ALTRUISM.

One of my favorite artists, Teresa Elliott, read the previous blog “Booty with Benefits” (the purchase of items that also benefits animals) and she decided that she’d like to donate the proceeds from one of her pieces to benefit equine charities!!

I was so excited, I nearly fell off my chair!

ANY ONE OF US CAN PURCHASE HER DONATED PIECE RIGHT NOW and do good at the same time!

OOOH LA LA!!  Purchasing without guilt!  The proceeds will benefit the equine charities.  I like it!

A BIT ABOUT TERESA ELLIOTT

I’ve written about and drooled over Teresa Elliott’s work previously (linked here and here).

For those of you who are new to her work, I can probably describe the popularity of her pieces in a few words:

This is the art that hangs in places that most of us rarely ever get to see but sometimes we dream about when we look through Western Design magazines.  You know… after her name comes descriptors like “in the private collection of”, etc.

I love this shot... It is from her website. Yum!

I guess when your painting is chosen to be on the cover of TEXAS TRADITIONS: Contemporary Artists of the Lone Star State, you are in the hearts of Western art lovers.

Teresa's piece was chosen as the cover of TEXAS TRADITIONS

HOW THE DONATION/PURCHASE WORKS…

Teresa picked the piece she wanted to donate (shown below).  She has signed it and will send it to you.

Yes, the donation/purchase price is $550.  (You click the button at the bottom of this post).

But, all of the proceeds from your purchase/donation (except fees and shipping) will go to benefit the three charities outlined below.  Golden Carrot, Blue Star Equiculture and The Bucket Fund.

So, if you have always wanted a Teresa Elliott piece but were never near one of her gallery exhibitions – or simply couldn’t afford one (like me…), here is a huge opportunity to have a signed giclee and also do some wonderful charity work.

WITHOUT FURTHER ADO, HERE IS THE PIECE!

Amazing!  This is the SIGNED, 20″ x 20″ giclee on board  piece Teresa has chosen to donate.

"Calf in Winter" 20" x 20", giclee on board, SIGNED!

This is an AMAZING opportunity for you art lovers!

IF YOU WANT IT, CLICK THE BUTTON AND IT IS YOURS!

Good luck!  I am so excited!!

(Once it is purchased, I will put SOLD and take off the button…)

THE CHARITIES THAT WILL BENEFIT!

Here are the charities that will benefit:

1)  The Golden Carrot

Click to go to the website

We love The Golden Carrot because they take the older and special needs horses that no one else wants.  To me, that is very gracious and commendable – and kinda hits home.   I love my wise, ‘been there – done’ that older horses and would hate to think of them in the slaughter pipeline because they no longer had ‘a job’.  Arrgh.

If you have ever wanted to sponsor a horse in need, go to this link and check out all of the great, older horses that really need someone special to help them monthly.

2)  Blue Star Equiculture

Click to visit their website

I love Blue Star Equiculture because they do such good for draft horses and farming in general… not to mention their very cute spokesperson, Cupcake the Herdmaster.  If you don’t know of him, he is a mini horses that lives with all the drafts.  He has his own FB page and also his own ‘put a smile on your face’ You Tube video linked here.

Anyway, times are tough all over and Blue Star just had a fire and lost all of their hay for the winter.

3)  The Bucket Fund

This month’s Bucket Fund benefits Autumn the little filly who was born in an auction yard, prematurely out of her emaciated mother who immediately passed leaving Autumn alone for 18 hours.  You can read here story here.

Autumn was rescued by HOPE FOR HORSES and in ICU.  Thanks to all of your good will, prayers, social marketing and donations, Autumn is receiving all the care she needs to survive.  Hope for Horses is so grateful to not have to make difficult money decisions regarding her care.  If she needs it, she gets it, thanks to the Bucket Fund.  (You are all awesome!)

I was sitting here thinking about how sad I am that I don’t have the time to go to the Cowgirl Up! Art show opening March 25th.  (I’m not affiliated, just an art lover.)

I really would love to go  support the 57 women artists who are showing there.  And, not only that, the events of the weekend look like TOO MUCH FUN!  The Desert Caballero Western Museum in Wickenburg, Arizona sure knows how to put on a party!  Here is the link if you’d like to check it out.

I wish I could go... click here to find out about it.

IT GOT ME THINKING…

I’m a fan of many artists so I often go to their websites to see their new work.  As I was pouting over not being able to attend Cowgirl Up!, I thought I might console myself by going to Teresa’s site (she will be showing there) and seeing the new work.  I actually have a love/hate relationship with looking at wonderful pieces that I cannot afford… but I torture myself regularly.  In fact, I have one of Teresa’s pieces as my screen saver.  I love it.

Anyway, as I was perusing her site, I found a bunch of new work.  Oh my!  I was drooling!  That girl is so prolific!  Since I love her work, I thought I would brighten your Friday with her art.  I sure hope you enjoy it as much as I do…

And, let me know if you go to the Cowgirl Up!  Art Show.  I’d love to hear all about it!

Christmas decorations already? Awww, C’mon… and Dressage Training Online (Heard of it?)

Friday, November 5th, 2010
Share

C’Mon.  I walked in Costco before Halloween and there were Christmas things all over.  There is something wrong with that.  What happened to decorum?  What happened to letting us feel our seasons?  Are our lives being dictated by Hallmark?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not against decorations or holidays.  I think we should celebrate anything as often as we can…  What I hate is having it shoved into my visage when it is way too early to digest.  Christmas happens after Thanksgiving.  It has always been that way and I like to keep that sort of thing in line.

Alright. I’m getting off of my soapbox long enough to bring you some items I’ve been thinking would make good equiney gifts and stocking stuffers.  I have a ton of ideas so I may do this a few times this month.  So, here is the first installment and I hope you get some ideas or at least, have some fun!

1)  DRESSAGE TRAINING ONLINE: I think this fits into the ‘gift’ category because you can buy it for yourself or for someone you know via a gift certificate.  (The problem with purchasing a gift certificate for someone else is that if the giftee gets hooked, then they have to assume the membership and therefore you are essentially helping them get hooked on something with a monthly fee.  But, the good news if you are a dressage addict, this service could be a good one!)

Click image to check out the website

I know nothing about dressage.  But, the idea of this website is that for a monthly fee ($28.80) you can view over 400 training videos at any level and from several well-known trainers.  Also, they have videos from dressage judges that show you why they deducted points from a rider or why one rider is the winner over another.

I am hoping this is a nice gift for a dressage person… It is waaaay less expensive than purchasing 400 videos, or even a few videos.  I like the idea of being able to pick and choose what you’d like to see.  And, if you don’t like the video, you don’t own it and then have to recycle it.  Or, if you like a video, you can view it as often as you want.  Or, you can find out if you like an instructor’s style before you buy.  If you do like an instructor, you can follow all their videos.  Or mix and match…  It seems like a win-win.

It costs $36 to join.  Then, you pay the monthly fee.  For me, I learn by viewing and also by watching myself.  So, this is step #1 if you are a visual learner.  I don’t know the movers and shakers in the dressage industry.  But, if you do, take a look and see what you think.  Here is the link.

2)  HOLIDAY CARDS: I found these cards on the Hoofprints newsletter.  Now, Hoofprints was created for farriers.  So, yup, you guessed it… almost all the cards have a hoof or a shoe on them.  But, you can specialize the greeting and there is quite a variety for a fairly low cost.  I picked out a few that I liked especially…

3)  WREATHS:  While I was on the Hoofprints newsletter, I saw two wreaths on cards that looked really fun to make!  The first one is made of horse shoes.  I’m guessing the wreath shown was welded together but I bet you could do it with wire.  Then, you could decorate it with ribbon or pine cones or or anything and just attach it to the wire.  I thought it was a great idea.  Am I the last to have seen this?

The other wreath was made out of a lariat or rope.  Really simple.  you just wire it together and decorate it.  Fun!  Easy!  Won’t slowly disintegrate…

4)  SWEETBIRD STUDIO STUFF:  I love anything from here…

But, my fav are these bridle/saddle angel amulet charms… It says, “Protect this horse”.

Click on image to go to website

I have one for Finn.  You can personalize it for yourself or gift it to anyone with a horse.  For some reason, I love giving Finn some excellent jewelry that also offers ‘protection’ on trail rides.  I’m not sure if it really works, but I feel better knowing his bling has a purpose.

5)  DONATION CERTIFICATES:  I’m going to whip up a few designs for these to be stocking stuffers or gifts for your friends and family that benefit certain horses or rescues that we love.  I will personalize the certificate so that your donation next month (December) can double as a gift for someone.  IE:  A donation in your name was sent to _________  for TONTO by  YOU.

I think this will take the sting out of donating when you know you need to be purchasing gifts for family and friends but you really want to donate to a great cause, too.  Maybe there are people on your list who would really appreciate being part of the good fight.  More on this later.

6)  ENSLAVED BY DUCKS:  This is a book for the non-animal person who is part of or living with an animal person…  I loved this story.  It is about a guy who falls in love with a woman who loves animals, fowl especially.  So, he has to go along with it, albeit with a shrug.  Little by little, these fowl grab his heart and take him on a wild ride of true adventures on a farm.  I was very charmed…  The author is Bob Tarte and he still lives on the farm with his wife and menagerie.  His new book is called FOWL WEATHER.   I haven’t read it yet.

7)  ‘HORSES WHO PAINT’  HOLIDAY CARDS: Maybe you have all heard about the horses who paint…  I’ve seen them on FaceBook, too.  Anyhow, they put out some Christmas cards that I admired.  I liked that each painted card also has a photo of the horse, Romeo, painting as well as his bio.

I have always loved Holiday cards that have a personal touch.  And, a card like this could bring an appreciation of horses to non-horsey people.  You can order these through the Hoofprints newsletter as well.  Here is the link.  Scroll down the page.

8)  Do you get the Soda Creek catalog?  I didn’t either until this last month…

As I was flipping, oh now that isn’t true… I don’t flip, I really LOOK…  OK, so as I was looking through the catalog I found two things that I thought were really fun.

The first was a wreath made out of shot gun shells.  Now, I’m not a gun person.  So, this has nothing to do with my persuasions.  I merely thought it was clever.  But, the thought of making this myself seemed daunting… And, I don’t have any target practice nearby to pick up pristine shells… So, you could purchase one, already made with lights inserted here.  I think this is very unique!

CLICK TO GO TO WEBSITE

The other great idea in this catalog was the engraved dog collar.  I have one for Dexter and it has saved us many times!  People can see the phone number without having to mess with tags.  It is truly much easier should your dog become separated from you.  And, this leather collar is much less expensive than what I payed for a nylon version.  So, I think this is a great idea to gift your dog with a new, snazzy, phone number embedded collar!  Click here.

9)   AT-CHOO JEWELRY: A very long time ago, when I was in college, I worked at a very fancy restaurant in Los Angeles.  While there, I met an artist (who was working as the cashier there) named Elaine Seamons.

Well, lo and behold, several years later, she has a very successful jewelry line.  And, as I remember correctly, she always loved her little doxie dogs.  So, it was no surprise when I noticed that she had a whole series of dog collar jewelry.  I’m not affiliated.  I just like her ideas.  And one of her ideas that I like best is that purchases help fund Cancer Treatment Grants for working dogs.  Nice!

But, what I thought was touching were her memory tags… Having lost a few wonderful pets recently, these kinds of symbolic gestures seem to carry a primitive and ‘maybe pagan but it feels good’ type of closure.

Anyway, if you are a dog lover, check out this link and then click around.  I think you will find some unusual and fun jewelry!

10)  Get this for yourself and your horse!  I received an email that said that Equion (an all around supplement that my horses have been eating for years and I love it and my trainer loves it…) is 15% off on the website.  Here is the link.

Truly, my trainer used to ask me how come my horses looked so good coming into training and I told him.  He started using it and it made a huge difference.  You will love it and it has a 90 day guarantee!  (I’m not affiliated…)

This incredible supplement is 15% off on the website. Click here!

11)  ON MY WISHLIST:  I want this coffee table book.  It just looks yummy and I love the cover by one of my favs, Teresa Elliott.  I saw that it isn’t yet at Amazon.  You can click the photo to purchase.

I want this book...

So, that is enough for now… I have a whole stack of ideas that I will be posting here and there.  I hope you saw some new things and maybe have some Holiday Inspiration now!  Thanks for coming along…!

BEFORE WE BEGIN:  WE ARE ORDERING BITLESS LG BRIDLES THIS WEEK (FROM GERMANY).  IF YOU WANT ONE, PLEASE LET ME KNOW VIA THIS LINK.  YOU CAN READ TESTIMONIALS THERE FROM THE OTHERS WHO HAVE PURCHASED THIS AMAZING (IMHO) BRIDLE!

Well, it is Sunday and I just couldn’t help myself from clicking about…

You see, I received my Cowboys & Indians magazine (which I proceeded to rip apart) and found several items which led me to several other items… and then a few hours pass and I feel the need to tell you all!  So, I’m sharing some of the prize clicks of the day!

First of all, I want you to know that I have not one item of Western wear in my closet.  I don’t have any Western tack and my belt buckles are very subdued.  However, I’m in love with the imagery.  If Hubby would let us, we would live in a lodge-style log house filled with Western furniture and art.  I’d probably even hang chaps on the wall and sit a retired branding iron in the corner.  But, alas, I am stuck just dreaming of Western landscapes and overstuffed couches.

Ah well, I guess I’m forcing my picks on you … but I figure maybe some of my clicks will lead you to new and fabulous clicks of your own.

TERESA ELLIOTT

OK, I’ve spoken about Teresa before (link here) and nothing has changed in my love affair with her work…

This COFFEE TABLE BOOK is affordable and has Teresa Elliott's painting as the cover!

But lookey what I found!   You can now purchase this coffee table book that has her image on the cover!  Love that!  I think it would be a great Xmas gift, too.

The other wonderful news is that I found a gallery that sells limited edition prints!  Yay!

I found prints!! Click here!

So, for example, you could get this limited edition giclee print on canvas for far less than the original.

Or, you could get a print of the piece they used on the cover of the book!

If you wanted to check out the limited edition prints or the artist’s proofs, just click here.  Very cool.  Love this.

Here is a new original.  I’m throwing it into the mix just because I can’t help myself.  If you like her work, please go to her website and treat yourself.

A new original

HUCKLEBERRY’S LINE SHACK

I found this little tack shop somewhere on line and I thought that maybe I have some gems here…

–First, I love hand braided horse hair things.  Do you?  If so, you’ll really appreciate this fabulous headstall.  Here is the link to visit it up close.  I copied the description here:

Horsehair headstall

Horsehair headstall

Gorgeous prison made hand tied headstall. Made in 1995 the colors and workmanship on this headstall are simply outstanding! Rich, vibrant tones that speak of class and uniqueness are the basis for this work of art. The man-hours it takes to produce this type of quality is simply hard to comprehend. Ride it or make it part of your collection, either way it is “one of a kind!.” $1400.00

–They also had a used headstall that was very ‘old school’ and I kinda thought it was special for a very low price.  I thought it was unusual, worn in well, had traditional adornments and looked like it had a history.  Here are some pics and the link. I have the description:

Oldie but goodie

Handmade Headstall Two Marked Silver Mounted Buckles? This is a used handmade slide ear headstall with two silver mounted cart buckles. The headstall and buckles were made by Randy Arnold. Randy is a long time cowboy, trainer, and cutter out of Dawn, Texas. The headstall is made out of harness leather. The buckles are completely hand cut with no laser cut pieces. The buckles are steel mounted with engraved german silver. The buckles are marked with Randy’s mark R. There is some surface cracking in the leather but it still has a lot of use left in it. This was one of Randy’s early personal headstalls. This would be a nice headstall to use.

Classic

Measurements
•    Headstall Length 35″ to 47″
•    Buckle Size 1 ¾ ” x 1 ¾”
•    Strap Width 5/8″
Only 1 in stock. $139.50

– I loved this braided key fob. I would get this, too, if I had the somolians.

Hand braided key ring - nice!

Rawhide Hondo Key Fob?This is cowboy cool! Hand braided by Mike Beaver who is one of the best braiders in the country, this rawhide hondo key fob is the ultimate in cowboy hip! The quality of Mike’s braiding is a thing to behold. This piece of rawhide legend is unique, useful and just plain fun to have in your pocket! You won’t find anything like this out on the range. Limited supply $150.00

–While I was in the used but not abused area, I saw these stirrups.  If I was in the market, I’d totally get these.  I love a wider foot pad and I like Ox Bow style.  And, I don’t ever see them like this.  I read about them and they are at least 30 years old.  Hmmmm.  Cool.  They look a little narrow but I didn’t call to get the sizes.  But, if they could only talk… Another bit of history.  Here is the description:

Very cool, old stirrups

Nickel Plated Diablo 2’ Tread Oxbow Stirrups These are an original pair of stirrups that come off a pair of tapaderos with Visalia silver I bought 30 years ago, they are in mint condition and have leather wear guards. $150. Currently at Beckman’s Saddle Shop, in Pendleton, OR

–Next I came upon some hand done silver earrings in a shape I hadn’t seen often.  And, bonus, they were relatively inexpensive ($82)!

Something different...

Sterling Sliver Engraved Teardrop Earring Posts ?This pair of sterling silver antiqued earrings is the last pair of this style made by the Hiram West Company. They are fully engraved and 1 7/8 inches long. These are hand made with great attention to detail. $82.00

–The last few little treats on this particular website were these pipe rail mounted saddle rack and bridle hook.  I don’t have a round pen, but if I did, I bet these would come in handy.  They weren’t expensive, only $45 and $68 respectively.   I’m not sure if these are common knowledge, but I had not seen them before.  Here is the descriptor:

Convenient Bridle & Saddle Racks: Made of the same galvanized round pipe material as the pens. They are portable and hang right on the panels. The bridle rack holds up 5 bridles. The racks are a great helper to hold or hang your equipment on & keeps your tack & saddle out of the dirt!  46.50, 67.50.  Please Call For Shipping Cost For Saddle & Bridle Racks Before Ordering. Shipping Cost May Vary. 509.952.3188

CUFFS!

I found this website that had TONS of tack and articles of interest.  I actually gave up searching through it because I got tired.  And for me, that is saying a lot!  Anyway, I found a huge array of cuffs.  You know, wide banded bracelets.  These are in leather.  I liked this one the best but there are many and they aren’t that expensive.

One of many cuffs!

LEATHER CHRISTMAS STOCKINGS!

Leather Christmas stockings! Click to see more!

What a concept!   These are different, eh?  Every year I try to find one unusual stocking to add to my collection.  This is a great find for me!

Another of the many styles!

There were many to choose from and I just picked three here.  The prices are a bit less than most unusual stockings (only $75) and I thought they would be a nice addition to any mantle, especially in a horse home.  I guess I liked that they weren’t too ‘cute’.  I don’t like ‘cute’.  Here is the link so you can see all the different models.

And another!

JULIA LUCICH

I saw an ad for her work in Cowboys and Indians magazine.

So interesting... Julia Lucich

I wasn’t sure how I felt about it but knew I was attracted…  So, I went to the site and saw several pieces that nudged me in a good way.  Here is the link.  What do you think?

This is called, "A Party Line"...

Since I’ve received so many sad emails from readers about all the heavy news surrounding the Mustangs and the poor abandoned horses at feedlots and all the unfortunate neglect and abuse cases, I’ve decided to continue on the happiest topics I can think of for this week.

(WE ARE ORDERING LG BRIDLES: We are ordering from Germany.  If you would like to get on the LG Bridle train, please click here and I will get your information.  Here is the original link for the LG Bridle.)

Today, I’m going to tell you how I stumbled upon the oil artist, Teresa Elliott.

COWBOYS AND INDIANS MAGAZINE

This is what caught my eye in the C&I magazine, "Baby Bull".

I love this magazine for so many reasons.  But for me, mainly I love the magazine because it is a feast for your eyes — or my eyes, anyway.  I love the colors and the presentation.  I swear that sometimes I feel I could EAT the magazine.  Or maybe just put some of the pages in frames and up on walls.  I just love the color sensibility.

So, every month, I sit down with my new magazine and literally start ripping through it.  Yup, I tear out anything I find interesting and file it in my “things I find interesting” folder.  Then, when I have nothing in my mind to write about (like today…), I look through my folder and always find something.

About an hour ago I was looking through my folder for something cheery and I saw this photo of a painting called, “Baby Bull”.  I had ripped it out from one of the magazines a while back.  I decided to go find out about Teresa Elliott, the artist who was mentioned below the ad.

TERESA ELLIOTT’S WEBSITE

OMG.  You go to her website and you see this:

Obviously, the scale of her work is not pronounced in a tiny ad in a magazine.  Hubba Hubba!  OMG!  I would absolutely die for one of these huge painting.  Actually, I would die for one of these huge walls to put one of these huge painting…

Can you imagine this work in an incredible house somewhere in Wyoming or Montana?  Actually, I’d put it in my house wherever I lived if I had the space.  Wowsa!  This would be great in a Lodge or a hip furniture store or my house… did I say that already?  Oh, sorry.

Anyway, I kept reading through her website and I came upon her Bio.

THE BIO

She is from Texas and lives in West Texas now.  What I find really fun is that when she was first starting out, before she went to art school, Teresa was one of those ‘QUICK DRAW” artists at Six Flags.  Do you know what I mean?  They are the ones who set up in a little kiosk and draw caricatures of you and your family in black marker, really quickly.  Anyway, she did this to raise money for art school.

Can you imagine?  Who would ever think that this quick draw artist would create these incredible works later on?  See… goes to show you…don’t judge a book by its cover, eh?!

OK, another fun fact about her is that she was fascinated by the Longhorn cattle her father raised.  As a little girl, Teresa would stand on the fences watching all the cattle for hours.  She said the cows made her feel peaceful.  As she got older, Teresa said she would photograph them.  It is from these photographs that she creates her art.

ART SHOWS

Then I decided to look at the show which was featured in Cowboys and Indians magazine.  As I clicked through the 9 pieces, I saw that 7 of them were already sold.  Wow.  Good for Teresa to have such a successful show!

Well now maybe we all cannot afford such wonderful art.  But, we can sure afford to go see it, if we live in the area.  So, here is a schedule of her upcoming shows:

August 21-Sept. 4, 2010 – TEXAS TRADITIONS SHOW with Fresco Fine Art Publications at Heritage Auction Gallery, Dallas TX

Sept. 16 & 17 2010 – WESTERN VISIONS – National Museum of Wildlife Art, Jackson, WY
